Issues

Windows XP SP 3 German

Installation date: 2006/12/30

  • After system is booted and prompts for user name and password, the network interface does not work, although it already asked for address information from my DHCP server. It then needs about two minutes until the network interface is working. If I log in meanwhile, some applications crash, so I always have to ping from another PC or my cell phone and wait until responses arrive. Then I can log in. This does not happen if the computer awakes from hibernation mode. This issue exists since summer 2009 (don't know exact date, because I normally use hibernation mode and it needed some weeks that the problem appeared at all und to analyse it).
  • Since some time in 2009, Java applets don't work in any browser (have got IE, Firefox and Opera). If the browser wants to load them, I see a "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException" in the console. Update: Tested on 2012/06/23 - works now on some pages.
  • Since about the same time a dialog "Installing software..." appears every time a drive is added to Windows (i.e. by connecting a USB flash memory).
  • Since some time in 2010, Java Swing doesn't work any more, only AWT. Swing applications cause the Java Runtime to crash at startup. Update: As of 2012/06/23, Swing applications work again suddenly.
  • Since about January 2012, DirectX doesn't work realiably any more. In Loksim3D, for example, it doesn't draw the rails any more. I have not even an idea, why this happens. I haven't changed the hardware for years and the software configuration is the same for several months - despite Windows Updates of course, but the problem did not appear first time after a Windows Update.
  • Since some time 2010 or 2011 (can't remember any more), Windows Media Player doesn't play most videos but instead shows a black screen and only plays audio. It doesn't report any error and the issue is independent of the codec used. VLC Player is also affected by that issue. There are workarounds for both players: In Windows Media Player, in the Options dialog, the graphical acceleration must be set to "Medium", in VLC Player in Settings/Video, "Windows GDI" must be selected.
  • A general issue that is "by design": Windows XP generally knows Bluetooth, but the built-in bluetooth stack (in all Windows versions) doesn't support bluetooth headsets. There's no way to use my bluetooth headset in Windows. So, I have to boot into Ubuntu in order to use it.
  • Yet another general issue that is "by design" that affects me since March 2011: At that time, I upgraded my memory from 2 GiB to 6 GiB. I always was sure that Windows XP could access so much memory via PAE, but I was partly wrong: The kernel has a lock inside that prohibits access to memory after 4 GiB (so the limit is not "by nature" but artifically programmed, just to bother people). Many people think that the 4 GiB is due to the "32 bit" of the CPU or operating system, which is complete nonsense (just think: How much RAM could Windows 3.x (was a 16 bit operating system) address? Was ist 64 KiB? No it wasn't, right?). Ubuntu 11.10 x86 (that's the 32 bit version) on my PC can access 6 GiB without any problem. At least, Microsoft is "nice" enough to let us know their limits. For Windows Vista/7/2008 I already found a hack to remove the lock, but for Windows XP I haven't found one yet. And unfortunately I have no time to make a hack myself currently.

Ubuntu 8.04/9.04/10.04 (original Kernel), Debian Squeeze (built 2009-09-14)

USB sometimes doesn't work at all, if it works, it only runs in USB 1.1 mode. Update Since Kernel 2.6.34, this isn't a problem any more. In Ubuntu, it's possible to install mainline kernels which I've done in 10.04, although it's orginally shipped with a lower version kernel.

Ubuntu 11.10

No issues: works perfectly and is realible and (especially Xubuntu) pretty fast.
